Tin Can Containers

© shoutingforha
My son recently requested that we put a desk in his room. He wanted a place of his own to do homework, but more importantly "make stuff."

We found a rustic table that worked perfectly with a pair of chairs that we already had. I hung a bulletin board and bought a lamp. His little workspace was beginning to take shape.

My son also requested individual containers to hold his markers, colored pencils, #2 pencils, crayons, scissors and glue. Being the frugal gal that I am, I didn't want to go out and buy a bunch of containers.

I have always used buckets in my son's room. I found some inexpensive galvanized buckets and tubs at my local Tractor Supply Company. They hold everything from Star Wars ships/figures to swords and various weapons. These buckets have always made clean-up a breeze.

Enter my brilliant idea...

In keeping with the decorum of his room, I decided to use tin cans to hold all his supplies. Instead of simply tossing the empty cans, I peeled off the labels and used a pair of pliers to crimp any jagged edges that may have remained. I then washed and dried the cans thoroughly.

It took just minutes to fill the cans and place them on the desk. My son now has all of his supplies within easy reach. He, of course, was thrilled.

I am equally as happy. Not only do the cans look great in his room, but best of all, I didn't have to spend a penny.

I do this too and they are my favorite craft containers. I love to get the really big cans from costco, they work especially great for pipe cleaners!

Love this idea! This post would be a perfect one to link up to "Twice the Fun Tuesday" at my site havingfunathomeblog.blogspot.com.

Twice the Fun is a weekly mr. linky about creative recycling that will start next Tuesday (Oct 14.) It would be great to see your post there!
