Field Day

Today was Field Day at my boy's school. For many of you readers, Field Day brings back fond, or sometimes not so fond memories of competing against classmates in the 50 Yard Dash, Three-Legged Race and Tug-of-War.

I can still remember my come-from-behind win in the Sack Race. The girl who was in the lead fell ten feet from the finish line. Turning on the speed, I was able to hop to victory and claim my first blue ribbon at the ripe old age of six.

Those were the days.

I'm not sure how things are done at other schools, but Field Day around here is nothing like it was when I was a child. Each class is divided into four groups. These groups rotate together through a series of events . While one group is always victorious, there are no ribbons or awards. The kids simply cheer one another on, win or lose.

Some of my favorite events...

Drip, Drip, Drench: A spin on Duck, Duck, Goose involving a bucket of water and an enormous sponge.

The Lobster Relay: A relay race where the students carry a water football under each arm and one between their knees.

The Outhouse Relay: Another relay race using plungers filled with water.
Needless to say, the boy had a great time. He had so much fun, in fact, that he didn't even mind when the festivities came to an abrupt and early end as a result of hurricane-like rain.

I am hoping that the boy is sufficiently exhausted by all the activity and will sleep in tomorrow morning. I could use a few extra hours of sleep.

It was a fun day...though I think I ended up A LOT wetter than the kids on my walk home--due to the hurricane-like rain!!
Fun times!
