Slithery, Slimy Worms... Oh, My!

© shoutingforha

The boy and I have been fishing three times this week. Now that we found a little pond just moments from the house, his enthusiasm has grown tenfold. Unfortunately, my disgust for worms and all things slimy is increasing at the same rate.

Worms never used to bother me. I think I may have even heard a tall tale about me trying to eat one when I was a toddler. I am certain that the story is a complete fabrication. I would never eat a worm.

The boy has been unable to master the art of baiting his own hook. The hubby is one of those I-don't-want-my-hands-to-be-dirty kind-of guys so the task always falls to me. All girls should be so lucky.

Every time I have to pick up a worm, my hands get weak. There is something about the snakelike way they slither around that totally creeps me out. The boy keeps reminding me that they should wiggle around. After all, I'm trying to thread them onto a hook.

The child is wise beyond his years.

In addition to my growing issues with the bait, I am repulsed by the slimy coating on the fish. Call me crazy, but I don't recall Colorado fish feeling quite this gross. I am sure that it has something to do with the fact that every body of water in the South is rimmed with nasty green slime.

The boy and I invited one of our neighbors to join us on our quick jaunt to the pond this afternoon. It was approximately 5,000 degrees outside so we only stayed for about an hour. Despite the short trip, the kids managed to reel in 10-12 fish apiece. Not bad, if I do say so myself.

I washed my hand five times when I got home just to make sure they were sufficiently clean. You can never be too careful... Especially when it comes to fish slime and worm guts.

I think I'm going to have to start wearing gloves.

The "tall" tale is actually totally true. You were about two and were fascinated with worms. I believe your comment was "Yum, worms good to eat". I promise that I did not let you eat a worm. Thought the story sounds disgusting now that you're an adult, it was pretty funny and cute when you were two.
