Friendships With Women

I had an impromptu lunch with a friend yesterday.  I was headed to Costco to fill the land yacht with gas and buy the world's largest bag of dog food when she called to see if I wanted to grab a bite to eat.  Sure we've emailed and had short conversations in passing, but we hadn't spent any time together in months.

My friend is sixty-eight.  As we were chatting away over lunch, I began thinking about how lucky I am to have friendships with women of all different ages.

Growing up, I didn't have very many girlfriends.  Most of the girls I knew were too clickish and catty.  I found this whole mentality to be exhausting and so I did the only logical thing... I hung out with boys.

As a rule, boys are generally good-natured, fun-loving and loyal friends... My kind-of people.  We would go hiking, watch movies, play penny poker and just hang out.  Then we grew up, went away to college, got married and scattered across the country.

I was forced to make new friends, this time with women.

I will admit that I was apprehensive at first, but over the years I have amassed a wonderful group of girlfriends.  They are young, old and everything in between.  They are childless and mothers to gaggles of children.  They are single, married and divorced.  They are retired, have careers and stay home with their children.  I could go on.

One of the best things about having a diverse group of friends is the varied perspectives that each woman brings.  I can talk to a friend who is in the same season of life as I am, get advice from someone who has gone before me, or spend time with someone just starting her journey.

It's a good thing.
