The Most Important Meal of the Day

Yes, I'm talking about breakfast, but not in the traditional sense.  While I firmly believe that the key to starting the day off right is eating a healthy breakfast, I'm focused on something a little more valuable... Time.  Specifically, time with my boy.

I'm not a morning person.  I would much rather stay up half the night and then sleep until nine or ten o'clock.  Sadly, the local board of education doesn't care about my personal preference and has decided to start the school day a little earlier.  The nerve.

Plenty of parents choose to stay in bed and let their kids fend for themselves.  It's their prerogative and I'm not one to judge.  But for me, it's more important to take advantage of every moment possible.

The clock is ticking.  As a parent, I only get eighteen short years with my son before he crosses over the threshold into adulthood, heads off to college and starts a life of his own.  Yes, he will always be my son, but the relationship changes.

That means I have just eight more years.  Eight.  As I watch each day tick by, I grow more determined not to miss one single opportunity.  Not one single breakfast.

I want to gaze at his beautiful face through my sleep-crusted eyes.  I want to laugh at his crazy stories as I sip coffee and he gobbles up a man-sized breakfast.  I want to listen to him chatter while I pack his lunch.  I want to drink in each moment.

For me, breakfast has taken on a new meaning.  It's not just about the food that we put in our bellies.  It's the one-on-one time I get with my son... A way to love on him and connect before he starts his day.

What could be more important?

i love this post! i simply adore how you have such a fresh look on breakfast with your son. so often i hear moms talking about hurrying out the door and breakfast is just flying by ( i see imaginary pancakes zooming in the air when i hear them talk)

but you have found a way to slow down and enjoy. that's what i'm learning (or being taught, i should say) more an more every day. slow down and enjoy this moment, it won't be back again.

thank you for sharing your thoughts and reminding me of the joy of slowing down!

you can't stop time and the inevitable chages it will bring your way, but you can enjoy every minute in the manner you choose especially with boy ha.

Our weekend breakfasts are more leisurely so we get to breakfast together. During school days, it's pretty crazy. I do let the kids fend for themselves, but I'm not sleeping! :D I wish.
