Life Is Good

My boys are camping out in the backyard tonight. It's going to be a no girls allowed, BB gun shooting, pocket knife whittling, firework launching, eating gobs of junk food, father-son bonding kind-of night. I love that they enjoy spending time together.

Once the hubby arrived home from work, the boys went to work setting up the massive tent. They also blew up the air mattresses and set up the camping chairs. You may think that such posh accommodations take away from a true camping experience. I say who are we kidding? We're not real pioneers... we're city folks.

Their last task was to use some extra bricks to build a fire pit. Ah, the joys of living in the county. What a treat it is to be able to burn things in your own backyard!

After the fire was burning, my son ran around collecting all the "necessary" items like his firefly lantern, pocket knife, BB gun and flashlight. They then assigned me the task of packing a cooler with everything they would need to cook dinner. Their menu is as follows: crisp bacon, scrambled eggs with loads of melted cheddar cheese, and pancakes with fresh maple syrup cooked over an open flame. Mmmm.

Once dinner is finished, they will probably spend some time whittling a spear out of an old stick and then pelt a few rounds into a metal bucket with the BB gun. They also have grand plans to catch fireflies at dusk and then shoot off a few fireworks.

After that, they will retire to their tent where they will snuggle up under some blankets and watch a movie on the hubby's MacBook while munching on some popcorn and candy. They will then drift off to sleep to the sound of crickets chirping, frogs croaking down in the creek and the occasional burst of bottle rockets from a somewhere in the neighborhood.

Life is indeed good.

As a side note, the boys requested a little help with the cooking when the smoke started to bother the boy's eyes. I wrote about it over at my other blog... the one where I am supposed to write about all the tasty things we eat... the one that I have horribly neglected. Stop by if you are interested.

Hope you enjoyed the peace and quiet while the male bonding was going on. What a good Daddy that red-headed boy has! :)
