My boy has an inexplicable love of deli meats and cheeses. At the ripe old age of two, he would scream "SALAMI! SALAMI!" anytime he saw a deli counter. His Pop Pops would have been proud.
He selects lunch meat like a man searching for the perfect engagement ring... crouched down, peering into the glass case, looking for just the right thing. It is quite comical. The boy knows exactly what he likes and is not afraid to ask for it.
He is constantly begging me to buy him a wedge of Gouda or a log of goat's cheese. He is a connoisseur of pancetta and fresh mozzarella. He devours smoked salmon sprinkled with capers. The boy's favorite is still salami, but only Genoa measures up to his high standard for quality.
The irony is not lost on the hubby. There is a highly debated story in his family surrounding salami sandwiches and summer camp.
As the story goes, he and his little brother were sent to a day camp one summer when they were quite young. Their well meaning mother, would allegedly pack them a salami and mayo sandwich wrapped in wax paper, pack it in a paper bag and throw a mealy apple on top. By the time lunch came around, they were left with a grease soaked bag and an inedible lunch.
To hear the brothers tell the story is quite hilarious. But to be fair, my dear mother-in-law has never been found guilty of these egregious crimes against lunch. To this day, the validity of the story is still up for debate.
On that note, you will have to excuse me. All this talk has given me a craving for overly salty deli meat. I just hope the boy has left a few slices for me.

Who doesn't LOVE salami?!! Now you have made me hungry!! Off to buy some salami, LOL!
My mother sent me to summer camp against my will. It was a miserable place.
Despite our BEGGING for more food, she would send us with shitty lunches. LITERALLY a mealy apple with a Wonder bread salami sandwich. The sandwich would be crushed and soaking with unrefrigerated grease from the meat and mayo. Neither was edible.
We would throw it away as soon as we got to camp.
The counselors would get so pissed because we told them our mom forgot lunch.
This is the truth.
Anybody that likes smoked salmon with capers is my kind of dude. Milk for the boy and Merlot for me and we'd have a par-tay! My little guy won't eat cheese. Who doesn't eat cheese? Now THAT is weird.
Hooray for salami. And smoked salmon with capers and pancetta, mozerella and all the other wonderful treats that the boy loves. How nice that he has such a broad range of much-loved foods! I, too, am now going to go purchase some salami. That sounds like a delightful afternoon treat.
Yahoo for the youngster who has good taste and appreciates fine foods; especially cheese and salami.
Boo for the two boys of long ago, ages 5 and 6, reluctant to go to summer camp and the culprits of the tale of the summer salami fiasco.
"Woe is me," says the victim of this perpetrated exaggeration.
"Deny. Deny. Deny."
