It's A Keeper

The hubby and I decided to take the boy to our favorite fishing spot this morning. The weather was delightful... warm yet breezy, and slightly overcast. In my mind it was the perfect day for fishing.

Since it's Memorial Day weekend, the lake was a little more crowded than usual. We managed to find a quiet spot next to a little dock. As usual, I was responsible for baiting the hooks. Who knew boys could be so wimpy when it comes to getting their hands dirty.

Let me tell you, luck was on our side today. While everyone around us sat staring aimlessly at the water, the boy managed to reel in three fish.

The only keeper was a 15 inch catfish. The boy was so excited. He has caught many fish over the years, but none of them were big enough to warrant saving. The boy insisted that we bring his trophy home for dinner, and I don't mean as our guest.

I had to dig deep into the recesses of my memory to remember how to gut a fish. I watched my Dad fillet literally hundreds of fish when I was a child. Strangely it all came back to me. I managed to fillet the catfish with precision. I think my Dad would have been proud.

The fillets are now hanging out in some salt water in the refrigerator. I have no clue why, but I seem to remember my Dad doing that as well.
As a side note, I discovered that my handy Rub Away Bar is the perfect device for removing the nasty fish smell from my hands. Thanks hubby. It's the gift that keeps on giving.
