The Ha family arrived home, safe and sound, last night after several fun-filled days in Washington, DC. We were exhausted and glad to be able to sleep in our own bed.
What is it about a trip that makes one's own bed seem so unbelievably comfortable? The very same bed that feels lumpy and in need of replacing suddenly feels like it's made from angel wings and fluffy white clouds. I can't explain it.

Where was I? Oh, yes... Our trip.

Not ones to set a leisurely pace, the boys and I crammed as much sightseeing into each day as possible. Our first stop was a tour of the U.S. Capitol, courtesy of our State Representative, Congressman Marsha Blackburn.

We met one of Ms. Blackburn's aides, a delightful young lady from Memphis, at the Cannon House Office Building. After a brief tour of the Congressman's office, she led us through the underground tunnel and into the Capitol. Despite the long lines at the countless security checkpoints, we enjoyed the tour.

The boys and I then made our way past the 19 museums that make up the Smithsonian Institution and began our walk down the National Mall. Even though the boy had seen the Washington Monument dozens of times on television and in pictures, he was practically giddy as he gazed up at the 555-foot tall structure.

Did I mention that Washington was experiencing a heat wave of sorts? By the time we reached the World War II Memorial, the boys and I were practically wilting. We decided to sit down on the edge of the pool and dip our toes in the water.

Once we were sufficiently refreshed, we headed towards the Lincoln Memorial. As we walked along the Reflecting Pool, we talked about the many historical events that have taken place on the monument's steps. Most notably, the March on Washington, where Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his now famous "I Have A Dream" speech.

The boy was especially excited to see the giant statue of Abraham Lincoln. His fascination with Lincoln began after doing a research project on the 16th President last year.

This was not my first trip to DC. I'd seen all the sights and visited all of the places you are supposed to visit. But there is just something about standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, looking out at the Washington Monument and the Capitol shining in the distance...
It makes my heart swell with thankfulness for the men and women who not only founded our great country, but for those who continue to serve and protect our way of life.
