For the past few days, I've been putting together a baby gift to drop in the mail for the upcoming baby shower. As is usually my custom, I bought a few things off their registry and have added a few favorites of my own.
One thing that I always like to include is a jar of my homemade diaper cream, or Bum Bum as it's known around here. There's nothing particularly special about my cream other than the fact that it's super sticky and won't rub off as your baby wiggles or crawls.
You may be saying to yourself, "This is all well and fine, Mrs. Ha, but I already have some diaper cream and it works just fine." Let me tell you, this cream is like magic. It will heal the worst case of diaper rash within a few applications.
Case and point... My father-in-law suffered a stroke several months before he passed away. During that time, he was bedridden and unable to walk or take care of himself. My mother-in-law, who is a small woman, was dependent on the nursing staff to assist with his daily hygiene.
Like so many people in his situation, my father-in-law developed painful bedsores and something akin to diaper rash. Nothing the doctors or nurses tried would clear it up. As a last ditch effort, my mother-in-law mixed up her own batch of magic cream. Within a few days, the rash was gone. The nurses were so impressed, they started using it on all their patients. It's just that good.
To mix up your own batch, here's what you will need:

A decorative container of some sort. I picked up this cute glass jar at Hobby Lobby for $1.99, but any container will do.

A tube of white diaper cream (i.e. Desitin) and baby powder.

Squeeze the entire contents of the tube of diaper cream into the bowl.

Add a ton of baby powder.

Gently stir until thoroughly combined.

You will need to continue adding more baby powder, mixing after each addition, until the cream is very thick. The consistency you are looking for is something akin to spackle.

Transfer the cream into your decorative container. Feel free to add a decorative label if you would like.
A handy tip from my pediatrician: If your child is prone to yeast infections, you can add a little Lotrimin (kills the yeast) and Mylanta (neutralizes the acid in urine) to the mix. Just note that you will need to add extra baby powder to ensure that the mixture is thick.
Go on ahead and mix up a batch of Bum Bum for yourself. Your baby's tender hiney will thank you for it.

You should market Bum Bum. What a great gift idea. Congrats on your new niece-on-the-way.
We've always used A & D ointment in my house. Could I use that instead of the Desitin?
Most commercial diaper creams contain petroleum/petrolatum products and are NOT good for your baby's skin. A more natural diaper cream would be best. The fragrance alone in the baby powder is enough to irritate tender skin.
@Jodee You know Jodee, I'm not sure. I've never tried it with A&D. I don't see why it wouldn't work too.
Thanks for stopping by.
When my kids would get a diaper rash they would scream when they were wiped with baby wipes. Even wipes with no alcohol burn. So I take a few wipes and rinse them out really good with warm water before wiping.
