Sounds easy enough, right? Finding the perfect fixtures was much more difficult than I anticipated. It took some time, but I am really happy with what we selected.

The hubby found these fabulous Millennium Lighting Galvanized 17" Warehouse Shade with the 17" Wire Guard to hang over the island. Build.com had the best prices on lighting hands down. We had our contractor use a 6" galvanized pipe and flange to mount them to the ceiling.
We hung three of these beauties over the island. Each fixture can hold up to a 200 watt bulb but I have found that a 75 watt bulb does the trick. Anything else would be overkill.

Ambient lighting is always an important addition to any kitchen. Most people go the traditional rout and have recessed lighting installed. The only problem was that the hubby and I aren't fans of recessed lighting.

Our solution was to hang simple Porcelain Outlet Boxes with Halco Silver Bowl light bulbs. The silver serves two purposes: 1) It prevents glare and harsh rays from irritating your eyes. 2) It reflects the light towards the fixture and, in our case, the ceiling which fills the room with a warm glow.

The fixture over the sink proved to be the most difficult to find. I wanted something that would compliment the large galvanized pendants that we hung over the island without overpowering them.
While perusing lighting online, I came across a fixture similar to the one pictured above. It was far too expensive for my taste but looked like it would be easy enough to recreate. And recreate we did.
I am really happy with how it turned out. Best of all, the fixture cost less than $20 to make.

These are such fantastic ideas to get the lighting done right in your kitchen! For me, I like the dim lighting that sets a romantic setting. Do you have any pointers for that type of lighting in the kitchen?

The big lights that hang over the kitchen island are actually connected to a dimmer switch. It was easy to install (the hubby and I did it ourselves) and it allows us to lower the lights whenever we want. Maybe that would work in your kitchen as well.
