Snow Day

My husband and I moved from Colorado to Tennessee 12 years ago. People usually assume we must have suffered a momentary lapse in judgment to do something crazy like that. Although we have grown to love the South, there is one thing that continues to be an issue for me... the complete lack of snow. It is just wrong!

In the South, saying the word "snow" is like shouting "fire" in a packed theater. At the mere mention of the word, all able bodied adults rush to the nearest Kroger and buy all the milk, eggs and bread that they can cram into their carts.

After watching this phenomenon for over a decade, I believe I have uncovered a conspiracy. Anytime the grocery stores have surplus food lying around, they simply call the local weather man and suddenly the shelves are bare. Coincidence... I think not!

Last week was no different. For days the weather men had been predicting several inches of snow falling Wednesday night and into Thursday morning. Dare I hope that they could be right this time?

My son awoke before dawn and ran to the window. Sadly all that he saw was the dry, bare ground. Not even a drop of rain had fallen.
Dejected, he scowled and asked when we could go to Colorado again.

Thankfully, the school board couldn't be stopped by the "non-event." They made the safe decision and canceled school anyways.

I wish my parents lived in the South when I was a child.

Then, when all hope was lost, a something wonderful happened while we were sleeping Thursday night. For the third time in 12 years, snow fell in Tennessee. We awoke to find everything covered under several inches of fluffy white snow. Miracles do happen.
