As Heard Tonight, vol. 2

Welcome to the second installment of what will probably become a regular entry.

My son's 1st Grade class has been working on double-digit addition with regrouping (or carrying over as I was taught). We spent some time practicing at home the other night. I explained to him that if he could add two digit numbers, he could add any two numbers together using the same principles. To prove my point, I had him add two 7 digit numbers, which he did with ease.

After dinner last night, I decided to teach him how to do double-digit subtraction with borrowing. I have to admit that I was surprised by how quickly he picked it up. After only three or four problems, he was unstoppable.

Fast forward to tonight... My son was giving me a quick summary of his day today. He informed me that his teacher tried to teach the class how to subtract with borrowing. I asked how everyone did. He replied, "No one knew what she was talking about... except me, of course. I did all the problems on the worksheet before she quit talking."

He also told me that he felt bad that his friends didn't understand. To make them feel better he apparently told them, "Don't worry about it. I practiced this at home last night." I love when his compassionate side peaks out.

Now for the good part... My son looked right at me and said, "Thanks for teaching me all about math. I didn't have to be embarrassed today because you already taught me how to do it. You are REALLY smart. Smarter than anyone in my class."

In my son's estimation, I'm officially smarter than a First Grader.
Nice.

Good thing you are blogging these moments. One day, you can show him this and say, "See, you thought I was the smartest person you knew."

What a sweetie-pie that boy is! ;)

i guess all you'll need to do is keep pace with him for as long as you can. Then, when it gets too hard you can play the indignant teenager in a fit of reverse psychology.
