As you can, or maybe cannot tell, the ants have done absolutely nothing since my last update. Their entire existence is spent in one of two places... huddled together at the bottom of the ant farm, or rearranging the pellets that make up the ant hill on top.
It is my firm belief that the only reason they are messing with the mound is because the boy accidentally dropped the farm. Twice. As a result, the OCD ravaged ants deemed it necessary to straighten things up. I wish I could convince them to do a little tidying up around here.

On a sad note, the ants have lost 4 of their comrades this week. It has been my job to remove their lifeless bodies after they are carried to the top of the ant hill. Lucky me.
I noticed this morning that there are three additional ants that have become entombed in the bottom of the habitat. For some reason the other ants are beginning to neglect their duty as corpse removers. The family and I will now have the joy of viewing their tiny decaying bodies on a daily basis.
I suspect that the remainder will follow suit in short order. According to the brochure that came with the ant farm, an ant's life span is only a few months. Since our colony has no queen, there will be no little ant babies to repopulate the habitat. Such is the circle of life.
I am curious to see what the boy will want to do with the ant farm once all of the creepy crawly inhabitants have died. Will he want to order another set of ants or try and capture some unsuspecting insects from the yard? Maybe he will prefer to ditch the ants all together and just have a really cool nightlight. Only time will tell.

I never remember my brother having to deal with dead ants, but, then again, he did drop his ant farm and the ants went EVERYWHERE...and they were red ants that bite...NOT COOL! I'll be interested to see what your son does do with the ant farm in the end. :0)
