How Low is Too Low?

I am sorry to say it, but once again I am embarrassed to admit that I live in the great state of Tennessee.

As I was reading the news online, as I do every day, I stumbled across an article on the Tennessean. It stated that a certain lawmaker from Memphis was pushing for legislation that would result in a fine of up to $1000 for publicly wearing pants "below the person's waistline... in a manner that exposes the person's underwear or bare buttocks." The gentleman finds this fashion statement to be "offensive."

Seriously? Have we as a society reached the point where we need the government to regulate how we wear our pants?
It is nice to see that my tax dollars are at work on such a worthwhile cause.

Maybe this gentleman should sponsor a bill that would fine women for showing too much cleavage. Better yet, what about penalizing people for wearing spandex unless their bodies are sufficiently toned and cellulite free.

Like this man, I don't enjoy catching a glimpse of someone's crack as I walk past (no offense to you plumbers). I can also tell you that as the mother of a young son, I am frequently annoyed to see scantily clad women traipsing about town. Can I get an amen?

That said, I am not interested in having the state of Tennessee regulate what is appropriate or inappropriate for people to wear. This is definitely an issue that should be dealt with by parents, teachers or employers... not the government.

If this bill passes, my boy is going to be incredibly unhappy. As many of you are aware, he loves to wear his pants low on his hips. I cringe just thinking about the arguments that would arise as he got dressed for school each morning.
