The time has come for the final chapter in the boy's ant farm saga... at least for now. The last Harvester ant has finally succumbed to death. Truth be told, the little creature was barely hanging on to life and the boy decided to put it out of it's misery.
The ants had slowly been dying, one-by-one, and their lifeless bodies have lay decaying in the ant farm for the past few weeks. It was really starting to look gross. I, for one, was thrilled to be able to clean the mess up once and for all.
It was quite a task to remove all of the tiny corpses from the habitat. After some careful excavation using a bamboo skewer and a drinking straw, I was able to rinse out the remaining bits using the sprayer at my kitchen sink. The process was quite disgusting.
After allowing the habitat to dry completely, the boy has decided he would like to use it as a night light for the time being. The effect is pretty darn cool.
I'm sure that at some point the boy will want to recolonize the farm with some more ants. He has already talked about capturing a few from our yard. I wonder if there is a way that I can warn the poor unsuspecting creatures.
