As you know, I have been keeping an eye on a robin's nest that is perched atop my back porch light. The mama robin has been faithfully sitting on her three eggs for the past few weeks. Saturday's discovery of some tiny cracks in one of the eggs let us know that the blessed event was fast approaching.
After waiting a few days, I decided to have a little peek into the nest. I will admit that I was worried that the mama robin would be unhappy with all of my snooping. Having my head pecked at by an angry bird is not my idea of fun.
To my surprise, the mama patiently sat on a nearby branch as I neared the nest. I teetered on top of the patio chair; arms extended over my head, and quickly snapped a few pictures. Imagine my delight when I realized that all three eggs had hatched.
Nestled safely in the nest were three featherless and helpless baby birds. I love how their tiny heads are resting against one another. The mama bird must be very proud.
The boy has already determined which of the little birds is his favorite (the one resting at the bottom of the picture). He thinks it has the "cutest face." The other two, he proclaimed, are "nasty" and look strangely like tiny lizards. How he can tell the difference is a mystery to me.
It is going to be exciting to watch the babies grow. Before long, they will be stretching their tiny wings and making their first trip out of the nest. I can hardly wait.
