After a brief respite due to some unseasonably cold weather, the Cicadas are officially out in full force. To be honest, I can hardly stand to walk outside and it's not for the reasons you might think.
Sure, the insects are a little creepy. Yes, they have been known to drop out of trees onto unsuspecting heads and fly down the fronts of shirts. Those things can be rather annoying, but the real trauma comes from the Cicadas mating call.
The noise is literally deafening, and I'm not joking. The screeching from the insects has been measured at over 90 decibels. Now, that's loud.
The hubby was kind enough to shoot this little video in our backyard. You'll have to excuse the patchiness of the grass under the big maple tree. I've been trying to coax some new grass to grow after the boy's trench digging project from last summer.

My ears are crying. What a horrible noise. Ugh.
Also, not meaning to be all nitpicky and persnickety, but the title on the video state March 20, 2011. Do you mean May?
That's pretty much what our yard looks like--YUCK!
Is your dog eating them? Ours are gobbling them up if we let them, which we aren't--YUCK!
I thought the last time they came out, the squirrels and birds ate them like crazy...but, I haven't seen that this time. :(
I'll be glad when it's quiet outside again...and bug swooping-free! :)
By the way--GREAT video! Really gives you a feel for them! :)
