Where I've Been... California Edition

Well, hello strangers!  Sorry for my extended absence, but I was on vacation in sunny California with my two favorite guys.

Our timing couldn't have been more perfect.  While the temperatures back home in Tennessee were in the triple digits, the boys and I were enjoying ocean breezes with highs in the upper 70's.  It was glorious.

We started our trip in San Diego. When we first booked our flights, we neglected to consider that a little convention called Comic Con was going to be in town at the same time.  This tiny oversight happened to be a blessing in disguise.

Instead of staying in close to the city, we booked a hotel in North County, Torrey Pines to be specific.  The area is named after the Torrey pine trees that fill the 2000 acre Torrey Pines State Reserve.  The landscape is gorgeous, to say the least.

The beach was a mere five minutes from our hotel.  Best of all, most of the beach-goers seemed to be locals from the handful of quiet neighborhoods bordering the reserve.  It couldn't have been more perfect.

Before we hit the beach for the first time, we headed to the sporting good store for some supplies:  chairs, a beach umbrella, boogie boards, a shovel and pail and a vat of total eclipse sunblock for my two pasty fellows.  We knew we would be spending a ton of time by the water's edge and wanted to make the most of it.

For the majority of our time in San Diego, we would get up, grab some breakfast and then head out on some sort-of adventure until lunch.  Our afternoons were spent at the beach.  The boy would boogie board, play in the waves or dig in the sand until he was completely exhausted.

Needless to say, we had a wonderful time.  It was a welcome break from the normal busyness of life.

To be honest, I had forgotten how much I love the beach.  Most of our friends in Tennessee regularly make the nine hour trek to the beaches on the Florida panhandle.  While the water is warm and the beaches gorgeous, the temperatures are the typically hot and muggy like the rest of the south.

All these years, I had just assumed that I hated the sweltering heat of the beach.  In reality, I don't like going to Florida (no offense to you wonderful readers in the sunshine state).  I despise being hot and so the temperate Southern California climate is much more up my alley.

We had such a great time that we are considering making San Diego a regular vacation spot.  If this trip is any indication, I think the boy would be thrilled.

Stop back by tomorrow to hear about some of the other things we did on our trip.

I'm a bit envious. San Diego is one of my favorite places. I loved the year that I lived there and would gladly return whenever the chance comes. Glad you had so much fun :)
