Random Thoughts On A Friday, vol. 5

I have been woefully absent the past few weeks but wanted to stop by and give you a few updates on the happenings at the Ha house.

1.  There is no news to report regarding my maimed middle finger.  It is sweatily hanging out in it's custom-made brace and is mending, or at least that's what I hope.  Of course there is no way to really know what's happening unless I take the brace off and risk bending the joint and ruining the past two-and-a-half weeks of healing.

I have been wearing rubber gloves wrapped at the top with a tourniquet-like rubber band every time I wash dishes, clean something or take a shower.  So far it seems to be helping to keep my finger dry and funk free, although the skin on the top of my knuckle has been achy the past few days.

I suspect that it is beginning to "break down" like the doctor warned it might.  Hopefully it won't develop a wound as this could be problematic considering my finger won't be released on parole for another six weeks.

2.  Our kitchen renovation is coming along, albeit slowly.  When the cabinets and flooring were removed we realized that there where three+ layers of subfloor in the kitchen.  One of the layers was particle board which had crumbled and disinigrated over time.

Why someone thought it was a grand idea to lay particle board in a kitchen is beyond all reason or logic.  It must have been one of those cases of "Southern Engineering" that I've heard so much about, although I think duct tape would have been a better option.

The hubby and I made the executive decision to go on ahead and have all three scary layers of flooring removed and pretty new subfloor laid in it's place.  We also decided to chop an eight-foot hole in the wall between the kitchen and dining room just because we could.

I promise to post more about the kitchen in the coming days and weeks.

3.  My hubby started a new job on August 1st and we couldn't be more excited.  His previous job required him to travel three+ days a week, every week.  While the constant travel was hard on everyone, my hubby bore the brunt of the burden.  The poor man was exhausted and ready to be home.

His new office is located a quick ten minute drive from the house (yay!) and, while he has a tremendous amount of responsibility, the job is relatively stress-free.  In short, it is exactly what the hubby needed and we are truly thankful.

4.  My boy was assigned his instrument for marching/pep band at school.  Any guesses about what he is playing?  Drum roll, please....

THE GIANT BASS DRUM!

When you are the biggest kid in the entire 7th and 8th grade band you get to play the biggest drum.  I think it's the law.

For the first few weeks the boy was coming home complaining that his back was "wrenched" or "had a ruptured disc."  At least he's not a hypochondriac.  Now, a few weeks later, he is lugging the drum around with no complaints.

He will make his bass drum debut at a middle school football game in a few weeks.  I can't wait to see him play.

I promise to be back blogging on a more regular basis.  I was momentarily overwhelmed by all the pressing decisions regarding the kitchen and the fall festival that I am organizing.  Now that things are falling into place, I am starting to feel a little less crazy and more like my charming self.

I shouldn't laugh, but I totally giggled at "ruptured disc" as a self-diagnosis for a middle school kid. I hope you share pics of your kitchen. I remember you painted it about a year ago, right? Are you re-doing every last inch?

@gretchen from lifenut Yes, we are re-doing every last inch. In fact, the new subfloor went in today. I promise to post pictures.
