A Tale of Broken Hinges, Scratched Lenses and New Glasses

We had a little incident when my boy was playing at his friend's house last Friday.  His buddy accidentally knocked off my guy's glasses and then stepped on them, breaking the hinge in half.  His sweet parents offered to pay for the repair, but we told them not to worry.  It was an accident after all.

The hubby took the glasses to get the hinge fixed on Saturday morning.  $60 later, the hinge was repaired but the lenses looked like they had been attacked with a rotary sander. Thanks helpful glasses repair lady for your overly aggressive polishing. 

At my hubby's instance, she offered to replace the lenses but it would take at least a week.  Due to some time restraints, we had to take matters into our own hands. 

Our first step was to see how much it would cost to get the lenses replaced at Lens Crafters.  Their one hour guarantee was just what we needed.  To our shock, the price for new lenses was a staggering $275.  Is it just me or does that seem like an astronomical amount for some simple single vision lenses?  Yikes!

It didn't take long to realize that it would be far more economical to buy an entirely new pair of glasses.  So that's what we did.

For a bargain price of $120 (thanks vision insurance), the boy got a brand new pair of glasses...  Ray Bans with a tortoise shell exterior and a cool blue on the inside.  I went on ahead and added the $20 insurance policy so that if the glasses break or become scratched within the next year, they can be replaced for $25.  All things considered, it seemed like the wise thing to do.
